Irrigation Tour 2073, 070 Batch - Summary

We, 070 batch of Khwopa College of Engineering went to 4 days Irrigation tour starting from 14th to 19th of Ashad, 2073. All the 96 students along with 5 faculty members were present in the tour which aimed to visit Bagmati Irrigation Project, Khagari Irrigation Project and Narayani Lift Irrigation Project. Hetauda Cement Factory was also visited as a bonus in this tour.

FIRST DAY
We started from the college. Four buses were manged for  around 100 people which was more than comfortable. Banepa- bardibas highway was selected as going route. So, we travelled in this newly made highway upto Bardibas. Though the highway was small we reached the destiny with ease and fun. Also, there were a lot of engineering used in linking this highway from hills to terai. We felt lucky to see hair pin bends, reinforced wall, gabbion wall and many drainage structures along the highway. We had started at around 8 Am in the morining, had lunnch at 12 PM in Nepalthok and reached Bardibas at around 3 PM.
After we reached to Bardibas, we directly headed towards Bagmati Irrigation Project, head office. It was already 5 PM reaching there. So, teachers had to convince the officers to allow us for Headwork observation. Finally we were allowed though it was late and getting dark.

Summary of Headwork: Bagmati Irrigation Project

Location: Karmaiya, Sarlahi
Start-Completion: June 2008-June 2010
District Faciliated: Sarlahi by eastern canal head and Rautahat by western canal head
Weir/Barriage portion: Barriage type
Major Components: Dividewall ( eastern and western), Fishladder (Eastern and Western), Barriage gates(15 for eastern and 15 for western), Canal Head Regulator( 7 on eastern and 5 on western)

Components of head regulator

1) Guide banks
Plan view of Headwork, BIP
-On both side of the river
-More natural than man made
-Flood bypass is constructed on the right bank (flow direction)

2) Divide wall/fishladder
- One eastern and one on Western
- Extends around 20m upstream and 20m downstream
- Fishladder attached to both divide wall on downstream side
- High silting on fish ladder has disruptted its work

3) Barriage Portion
- 30 gates are built (15 allocated for east and 15 for west)
- Gates sized 9*3 m and weigh around 10 ton each
- Gates are closed and open by electric lifting machanism, also by manual pully which is hard
and takes lots of time

4) Undersulice portion
- On eastern and western side
- Bed level below 1m of barriage portion
- 3 gates on each side
- Gates sized 9*4 m

5) Canal Head Regulator
- 7 on the eastern side and 5 on the western side

After headwork observation, we went to observe a cross drainage structure near to it. It was a level crossing.

Level  Crossing

It is the portion where canal meets the drainage/river at the same level. Gates or weir are made to control the water in canal in dry and wet season in level crossings.
level crossing visited
- Three gated structures are made (on downstream side of canal, on upstream side of river, on downstream side of river )
- On the wet/flood season the water from the river gets mixed to canal and the gates of downstream side (river) are opened to make the flood water flow in its natural direction.
- On the dry season the water coming from the river gets mixed with the canal and flow with canal water. The gates of downstream side of river are closed and canal gates are opened.

After then we went to Chapoor for night stay. All the students stayed in hotels around chapoor. We were satisfied with the facilities in hotels according to fee (500 per room).

SECOND DAY
Everyone gathered at 7 A.M. for the fresh start of the second day. We then went to observe one of the component of BIP. It was cross drainage structure i.e. Inverted Siphon.

About Inverted Siphon
- Located on 500 m east of Chapoor bus stop
- constructed to pass the canal when it crosses .... river
- One of the important and largest component
- Span around 100 m
- Canal Intake and Outlet can only be seen

BIP was over and we headed for Hetauda. We directly went to the Hetauda Cement Factory for observing things like manufacturing process, transporting equipments, structures built and overall ideas.
Then we went to Hetauda Fun Park for refreshment. We past some 1 hour enjoying and doing different activities in the park.
After that we headed towards Sauraha for second night stay. We were taken to Gaidalodge in Sauraha for it. We had dinner in the same lodge that night and slept early for the third day.

THIRD DAY

We went to Khageri Irrigation project early in the morning.

About Khageri Irrigation Project
- Location: Ratnanagar, Chitwan
- Also called Khageri dam
- Two canal head regulator on right of flow direction
- Net discharge: 0.14 cumec
- Area irrigated: 3900 Hecter
- Length of canal: 27+780 KM
- Cost of construction: 74 Lakhs
- Work Started and End: 2017,Magh- 2024, Ashad

We had lunch at about 11 AM and returned back to hotel. Field visit were almost over and rest of the day was allocated for Sauraha Visit. Most of the students were involved in Elephant Ride and Canoying while some of them were busy in cycling and Zeep Safari. So, the third day was the day to remeber for all the students.
We returned back to hotel after Sauraha exploration, had dinner at nearby Thakali and  enjoyed the night with songs and dance in the room.

FOURTH DAY
Tiredness has reached to new level and also it was raining early in the morning. So, we woke up a bit late, packed our things and became ready to return back to Kathmandu. We left the lodge at 9AM and reached Hetauda at 11 for lunch. We came from Tribhuvan Highway which joins Hetauda to Naubise. Though, the road was narrow and also it was raining all day long, we made to Nabise at 5 PM and reached Kalanki by 6:30. We entered kathmandu safely and everyone were at home by 8PM.
Thanks !!
