HOW TO SOLVE THE SUBMERGENCE/ FLOODING PROBLEM OF KATHMANDU VALLEY ?

Submergence or Flood in Kathmandu is not a new topic to discuss. Daily we see lots of pictures of different areas flooded with water in social medias. We also saw a bike being pulled out from the flooded water and a small kid being drowned on drainage water. This is not the problem of this year alone. It has been a problem from recent few years and it will obviously be one of the major problem in coming years.

So, What is the solution ?

 Here they are:

1) Rain Water Harvesting

Rooftop rainwater harvesting should be made compulsion in the houses to be made in Kathmandu valley. Feasibility study should be done in most of the existing houses whether rooftop rainwater harvesting can be done or not. And it should be installed by the government and house owner partnership.

How is it going to help ?

About 30-40 % land in Kathmandu is covered by houses and 75 % of that area can collect water. So, if we can trap that amount of water and store it in our tank, the flow volume of water on the drainage pipes will decrease significantly which will result in smooth operation of drainage flow. Then there will be very less chance of water to flow on the surface of roads, pavements and footpaths.

2) Under Ground Tank and Pumping System

This is the most unique and interesting idea I have purposed for solving this issue. In this method a underground tank is made under the road or side of road. The drainage pipe is connected to the tank and water is stored in the tank. Yes it contains stools, dead bodies and other garbage's too in the combined system of drainage but not in isolated/separate system of drainage. Then the water stored is pumped to a reservoir/water purifying system where the water can either be made drinkable or only for domestic use or can be used for agriculture. This should be done in Kathmandu valley with long term vision so that it will obviously work and will benefit in long term.

Also, if the water collected can be recharged through wells, pits and trenches that should be studied as well so that the decreasing ground water table of Kathmandu valley can be minimized.

3) Upgrade Drainage System
Drainage pipes in Kathmandu are not upgraded from decades and they are not maintained properly too. Clogging of drainage due to dust and garbage's are the main reason due to which water starts to flow on the surface even in small rain. Hence, they should be upgraded with larger pipes on the core areas of Kathmandu and should be washed frequently with the  pressurized water flow.

One and three are the immediate and possible solution while two is a area of study.
I wish government organize some workshops and discussion programs on this topics on large scale so that more solution might come and we can actually solve this problem very soon....
