TOP 5 Engineering wonders of the world

I am studying Civil Engineering and will be a Civil Engineer if the things go the right way. As I am wondering, what and how the civil engineering will decorate my life, I went around the world and tried to find some unbelievable engineering wonders. And I blessed myself that if these things can be done in this earth why not more uneven things can be done. Why can't I contribute to those wonders, why can't I start thinking of some more unbelievable  projects and imagination.

Five  wonders of the world that has made me to think what actually engineering can do are:

Panama canal

Before and after panama canal is made
  1. The idea of canal was introduced in 16th Century and the project was completed in 21st Century.
  2. About 20000 french worker and 6000 american worker died in the construction of the world largest canal.
  3. More than 60 million pounds of dynamites were used to construct and excavates the canal.
  4. It runs 24 hours a day with the huge fluorescent lightning system.
  5. It transports 4% of world trade and 16% of total trade of US.

Three Gorges Dam

The massive area covered by the dam

  1. It is the world largest hydroelectric dam which produces 22,000 MW of electricity. (about 11 times more than the Hoover Dam).
  2. It displaced around 1.3 million people and it is estimated that about 13 cities, 140 towns and around 1,600 villages have been submerged under the reservoir.
  3. The projects used 510,000 tons of steel-enough to build the Eiffel Tower sixty times. It is the second structure visible from moon after Great wall of China.
  4. It can sustain the earthquake of 9 RS. But if it collapse by anyways then 360 millions people will be badly affected downstream the river.
  5. The dam is that huge that it slows down the rotation of the earth by 0.66 microseconds.

Euro tunnels
  1. It is the longest undersea tunnel of the world and 11th longest tunnel in use.
  2. The depth of tunnel is 50 meter below the sea bed and its length is 31.4 miles.
  3. There are 3 tunnels in it. Two for trains and one for emergencies.
  4. Around 400 trains pass the tunnel everyday, carrying 50,000 passengers,6,000 cars and 54,000 tons of freight.
  5. The tunnel joins Great Britian with Coquelles in France.

Palm island
  1. It is one of few engineering wonder which can be seen from space.
  2. Over 100 million cubic meters of sand were used in making the island into the palm island.
  3. There are over 12,000 palm trees grown on the island.
  4. Over hundred studies were made for transportation and water supply.
  5. Bird view of palm island
  6. The beautiful island is connected by the simple bridge.

Millau Viaduct
  1. This is the tallest cable bridge.
  2. This huge project was completed in just three years.
  3. Its height is 804 feet.
  4. It was built in sections and later assembled by the cranes.
