Reasons behind the necessity of the Gas\Petroleum Pipeline system
Before going throgh the necessity of the project first the replacement of the project should be properly analysed.
The consumption of energy in Nepal is as follows.
The aim is to reduce the use of biomass, firehood and make a balance in energy consumption.
The one and only potential energy source is the electricity i.e. hydroelectricity in Nepal.
1) Hydro power vs Petroleum\Gas Transmission
So, how is hydropower development in Nepal?
The first hydropower in Nepal was built way back in 1911 with a capacity of 500 KW. Since then it has been a century and more but the total production of hydroelectricty is less than 1000 MW which is very less compared to total energy consumption and half of the net demand of electricity on traditional basis.
Why people easily say Hydroelectricity can replace Fuel/ gas in Nepal within few years or decades ? Does that hold right?
When a issue of petroleum and gas is raised as a serious one, people ignore it because we think we have potential in hydroelectricity. Yes we do have. But is it enough ? If Yes, by what time ?

The peak demand of Nepal is 1200MW and we lack around 500-700 MW of energy. But that demand is just for traditional use like lightening, TV, electric appliances etc. That doesn't counts cooking, industrial use , vehicles energy and more.
That peak demand is just the 3-5% of total energy consumed in Nepal.And what we think is the end of loadshedding is the end of everything to be contributed by hydropower. So what we don't think is rest 90% of enegry should also be faciliated by hydro power. So its huge amount of hydro electricity needed for the total replacing of non reneuwable sources.
As per the calculation to reduce the use of biomass to 10% and fuel to 5%, the total energy required is around 10000 MW of electricity in Nepal.
So by when we are reaching this target. We haven't been able to produce 1000 MW of energy in 1 century. For 10000 MW , it might take 10 centuries or more.
Why should this project be commenced instead of commencing some more hydropowers ?
Its a fair question that if hydroelectricity can't be built, how on the earth this can be built within some decades. I think and strongly believe it can be built.
Because hydroelectricity should be built by ourself but the this project is not completely built by ourself. It will be built by International Companies who wants to sell their products. Yes, if we gurantee certain percentage of petroleums and gas to them, they will connect us with pipelines in external import system and internal distribution system. So, some percentage of it will only be governed by our government.
Beside this, this projects doesn't aims to let hydropower down or discourage it. It instead aids the hydropower. It is obvious that hydro can't replace the fuel and petroleums. So, this projects aims to aid hydropower in those area of energy consumption where hydro electricity will not be enough.
Beside the comparision with hydropower, it has other importance as well.
2) Production of Electricity
In the recent few decades petroleum has been used for only vehicles, cooking and few industries. But they can be used to produce electricity as well. The petroleum plant can be built fast and can generate some good amount of electricity, enough for a city or a disrict. Beside these, generators can be used in each complex, houses and streets to produce small amount of electricity.
The cost of electricity might be high initially but for the long term and large volume it will absolutely be fine and affordable.
3) Storage
We have seen from history that the sudden intteruption in petroleum supply brings a huge instability and difficulties in the life of people for a month to year. The main problem being so is we lack storage inside the country.
So, this project brings a holistic change in the storage capacity of fuels and petroleums. The supply will be 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whole small to big storage units will be full every second. And believe the fact that, a sudden intteruption in supply by any reasons will not cause any effect for at least 1 year and maximum of 3 years.
4) A well faciliated society
The most beautiful thing about time is, it changes. But we don't want change, we always make excuses and rely on what we have. The world has reached its greatest height. We were richer than them at some point in history.
Do this projects defines the change?
Yes, definately. When you have energy you can do anything. Energy defines the development. The supply of gas pipeline in the city is the hardest job on the earth to do. Believe it, if this will happen in near future you will be proud to call "THATS CALL A CHANGE". And this will last for centuries to come with modifications and reinovations.
